Trick-but-no-treat

L'Halloween s'en vient pour nous... mais pas pour nos voisins.  Malheureusement pour les enfants, nous avons appris, il y a déjà longtemps, que l'Halloween n'était pas célébrée en Australie.  Il y a bien un petit étalage de bonbons et de bébelles d'Halloween à l'épicerie, et quelques déguisements au Target et au Toys R Us, mais ça se résume à ça.  Pas de tournée de bonbons, pas de décorations, pas de journée déguisé à l'école.

Nous, on a fait comme si de rien était, et on a décoré un peu.  Et puis j'ai obtenu la permission pour qu'Élie puisse aller à l'école déguisé jeudi prochain (quand on a 4 ans, être déguisé est toujours cool... alors il n'aura pas l'air fou, même s'il est le seul déguisé dans sa classe).  Et on a réussi à organiser une genre de tournée d'Halloween avec d'autres familles canadiennes et américaines... en voiture et avec un GPS.  Mais bon.  Et puis finalement, on a même réussi à trouver une VRAIE citrouille orange pour décorer!

(Les citrouilles ici sont vertes.  Et pas vraiment rondes.  Mais comme Costco veille à ce que les expatriés de l'Amérique ne manque jamais de rien, on y a déniché une citrouille d'Halloween.  À prix d'or, mais quand même.)

Halloween is coming up soon for most of you, but not really for us...  Unfortunately for the kids, we found out a while ago that Halloween was not celebrated in Australia.  There is a few hints of Halloween in some shops, like a special candy rack at the grocery store and a few costumes on sale at Target and Toys R Us, but that's about it.  No trick-or-treating, no decorations, no dress-up day at school.

But we are ignoring the fact that they are ignoring Halloween, and decorated the house a bit.  And I obtained permission so that Elie could wear his costume to school on Thursday (dressing up is always cool when you are 4, so he won't look foolish even if he is the only one dressed-up in his class).  And we managed to organize a pretend-trick-or-treating with fellow canadians and americans expats.  A trick-or-treating done in cars, with GPS, but a trick-or-treating nonetheless.  Oh, and we also found a REAL orange pumpkin to carve!

(Pumpkins are mostly green here, and not really round.  But since Costco takes care that no North American will ever have to manage without their stuff from back home, we got one!  A very expensive pumpkin, but still.)
