Exploring: The National Arboretum

La fin de semaine dernière, nous sommes allés jeter un coup d'oeil à l'Arboretum de Canberra.  En fait, nous ne sommes pas vraiment allés à l'Arboretum, mais plutôt au parc de l'Arboretum.  Et il est extraordinaire.  Le parc a un thème d'arbres (je sais, je sais, c'est quand même surprenant pour un arboretum...), et est constitué de glands gigantesques reliés entre-eux par des tunnels, des glissades et des filets.  S'il n'y avait pas eu autant d'enfants, je me serais certainement rendu au plus haut.  J'ai bien essayé de convaincre Élie d'y aller, afin que je puisse "l'aider" à grimper, mais il a eu peur rendu au deuxième étage et a voulu redescendre.

Les australiens construisent vraiment de super parcs de jeux.  Nous avons eu la chance d'en découvrir déjà plus d'un, tous vraiment uniques et amusants (quand on voyage avec deux enfants de moins de 5 ans, on "visite" beaucoup de parc...).  Certainement, le fait de ne pas avoir de neige ou d'hiver digne de ce nom doit aider leur créativité, mais je trouve quand même mes enfants pas mal chanceux de pouvoir jouer dans des endroits aussi ludiques.

Il ne faisait pas très beau dimanche dernier, et on a fini par rentrer se réchauffer un peu dans le bâtiment principal de l'Arboretum, qui est aussi spectaculaire que le parc.  Construit très haut et tout en verre, il offre une vue superbe sur la ville et les montagnes qui l'entourent.  On s'est laissé tenter, et on a lunché sur place afin de profiter du paysage bien au sec et bien au chaud.

Je ne pense pas qu'on finira jamais par visiter l'Arboretum pour vrai.  Je pense qu'on ne se rendra jamais plus loin que le parc.  Mais par une belle journée ensoleillée, m'asseoir tranquille à regarder les montagnes avec un bon petit latte alors que les enfants sont trop occupés pour s'occuper de moi ne me semble pas trop pire comme idée...

Last weekend, we went to check out the National Arboretum in Canberra.  Actually, we didn't really go to the Arboretum, but rather to the playground at the Arboretum.  It's awesome.  It has a tree theme (surprising, I know, since it's at the Arboretum...), and it's made of giant acorns connected to one another with tunnels, slides and nets.  If there hadn't been so many kids, I would totally have climbed to the highest acorn-shaped pod.  I did try to make Elie go so I could "help" him up, but he choked at the second pod.

The Australians really do make great playgrounds.  We have been to quite a few unique et fun ones so far (when you travel with two kids under 5, you do end up "visiting" lots of playgrounds...).   Of course, I suppose that not having snow or any real winter for that matter helps their creativity, but I still think my children are pretty lucky to be able to run around in such playful environment.

It was pretty cold that morning, so we ended up going inside the main building to warm up a bit, only to find out that the building is almost as spectacular as the playground.  It's built high, and all in glass, and offer a splendid view of the city and the surrounding mountains.  It was so nice in fact that we decided to stay and have lunch.

I don't think we'll ever really visit the Arboretum.  I would be very surprised if we ever make it past the playground.  But sitting up there on a sunny morning, with a latte in hand, looking quietly at the view while the kids are too busy to care about me doesn't sound like a bad plan at all...
