Exploring: Sydney

Haaaaaa... Sydney.

Tout me semblait avoir tellement changé!

**************************************************************

We decided to go to Sydney a little bit at the last minute.  And because it was a long weekend, we were only able to book a hotel for the Friday night.  But Sydney isn't that far away, so we figured we would just come back on Saturday afternoon.  However, because we had so much to see and do, and also because we wanted to enjoy the festival that was going on that weekend, we stayed a little longer than expected...  And although Nic tried very hard to find us a last minute hotel for the Saturday night, we didn't let that bring us down and enjoyed our trip to the very last second... and finally made it back to Canberra in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

I was very excited to go back to Sydney after having lived there for a year during a university exchange, 11 years ago already.  I wasn't disappointed.  But everything had changed so much, I hardly recognized it.

If the trip started with a bit of disappointment (Mia thought we were going to Disney, instead of Sydney...), the wind quickly turned.  We started off with an expensive visit of Sydney's aquarium, because I think Élie would have died otherwise.  And I like the aquarium anyway; it's gorgeous.  After three hours of walking and after reading out loud about a thousand facts on fish and other marine species, we walked out to Darling Harbour for a bit of fresh air and a pit stop at the Lindt coffee house.

Darling Harbour is probably the area of Sydney that has changed the most from what I remembered.  If it used to be a very tourist spot, it has become a large recreational area that seems to attract tourists and locals alike.  And right there, among the bars and the restaurants, we stumbled upon what is probably the nicest playground we had ever seen.  The kids, who we were hoping were slowly falling asleep in the Chariot, jumped out of it faster than it took us to say "hey! look at that!"

It wasn't particularly warm, but as usual, our kids were attracted right away to the water games.  So of course, the day ended with two very tired and very wet small children.  And something that had never ever happened, happened: Élie begged us to go back to the hotel so that he could go to bed.

The next day, we tried to take it more easy (and failed) and went for a stroll at the botanical garden (where you have the best view of Sydney's famous opera house), and then for a visit to Manly beach.  And so obviously, this day too ended with a very wet child.  But why try and resist life's little pleasures, right?

So in our two days, we walked a whole lot, ate quickly, slept very little and answered a million questions.  And we also went to the Vivid festival, but I am keeping that part for tomorrow's post!
